BSA TROOP 181
COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 8, 2002

Present: New Committee Chairman Phil Reece, Terry & Judi Nichols, Ed Blondin, Sandy Schwartz, Andy Shadrick, Al & Hans Fredrickson, MaryAnn Bushaw, Brian & Ronny Kemker, Peggy Schuchard, Eric Schmidt, Dan Murphy, Max Cortright, and Jon Paul.

Treasurer’s Report: Jon Paul presented the financial report.  A summary of the wreath/tree sales was included as well as a comparison with the expenses/profits from the previous year.

Old Business

Swimming:  Last night was very successful.  There was good attendance, and the pool was adequate.  Terry requested permission to invite Troop 40 to join us for swimming.  Motion was passed.  Few Scouts go to McDonalds after the swimming.  Suggestions to discontinue it or change it to Burger King were discussed.  It was decided to go to Burger King next time.

Christmas Tree Sales:

ü       407 trees were recorded, but there was $200 extra.  A few trees were stolen, and only one check bounced.

ü       There is more than a half box of netting left, so only one box will need to be purchased for next year.

ü       Al suggested putting up an appreciation sign for a few weeks after our sales thanking patrons for their support.

A second suggestion was to put up a sign to advertise wreaths for sale at the lot.

ü       The American flag sign is in the Pauls’ chiropractic basement.  No one knows what happened to the blue tarps.

ü       The fraser firs were brokered trees; Rick McCanse does not grow them himself.  Terry had requested larger trees, but 20 of them were the same size as last year.  The supplier reduced the price on those 20 trees to $20 each.

ü       Discussion was held about the supplier, who is retiring, and whether delivery of trees should be staggered.  Number of trees to be bought must be ordered in August/September.

ü       Consideration of buying “tree removal bags” next year … to be sold at a profit.  Kelco sells bags at 48/$44.00.  Other prices for bags will be explored.  A sign to advertise these would be needed.

ü       A detailed report was handed-out.

ü       Ed Blondin needed a check for $37.50 for Pack 429, who shared the proceeds of two 48”wreaths with us.

Prepare for the Webelos Scouts: Sandy presented information for the Webelos open house (1/29/02) and campout

(2/8-10/02).  It is important that advisors talk with all our Scouts about making the Webelos scouts feel welcomed.

ü       A detailed plan for the open house has been developed and was presented.  The troop trailer will need to be available.  Preparation with the Scouts will need to occur at the 1/15/02 meeting, which cannot be at the Fire Station.  The night will involve a round robin of activities for the Webelos with Scouts leading the activities and other Scouts guiding the guests through everything.  Sandy will send invitations to the Webelos scouts.

ü       The campout will be held at Lockwood Park on Feb. 8-10.  Friday night would be just Scouts & advisors.  Webelos and parents will join us on Saturday at 10:00 AM.  Activities are planned for the rest of the day and Sunday morning.  The cost would be $5 per person.  The troop has a campout the following weekend; so leaders will work with fellow Scouts to decide who will attend which campout (goal is for ½ of the troop at each event).

The subcommittee has done excellent work, and their efforts are most appreciated!

Merit Badge Midway: There are 5 advisors and 12 scouts registered for January 19 at Sauk Valley college.  All is prepared.

New Business

Location of meetings:  Will be decided after knowing how many new Scouts will be joining.

Klondike Derby: The troop has been invited to lead an event on January 19 at Camp Indian trails in Janesville.

Eric Schmidt will explore this further.

Indian Lore & Geology merit badges: MaryAnn is planning a one-day event to earn these two merit badges.  She will plan it for March, after any new boys become part of the troop.

Automotive Insurance Proof: Dan Murphy reminded members that details will be needed for our Annual Tour Permit.  Need drivers license number, # of seat belts, and limits of liability from new members, or those with different vehicles or coverage.

Philmont: Information has been circulating by Bill via E-mail.  Troop 181 will have 16 Scouts eligible to go in July 2003.  A down payment of $50 per person needs to be paid by January 31, 2002.  Brian Kemker moved that one of the crews be given to a troop in Cary, IL that has contact with Andy.  Motion passed.  Bill will contact all the Scouts eligible to attend the treks.  Each crew will have its own advisors (2-minimum & 4-maximum).

Hiking:  Al is planning several more hikes.  Al made a motion to buy patches for the Scouts who complete the two hikes planned at Camp Lowden and Canyon Camp.  Motion passed.

Lashing Projects: Al requested help in finding lashing projects.  The Pioneering Merit Badge pamphlet and an upcoming “Show & Do” were suggested.

Trailers:  Eric will work with Dan and Jon to write an appropriate receipt for the person storing our trailers.

Committee Positions: Peggy will be our OA Advisor.  We still need an Advancement Chairman.

Brian Kemker: Many, Many Thanks for being the troop Committee Chairman, and Best Wishes in Michigan!!!

He hopes to be back for Ronny’s Eagle Court of Honor.
