BSA TROOP 181
COMMITTEE MINUTES
February 5, 2002

Present: Terry & Judi Nichols, Ed Blondin, Sandy Schwartz, Andy Shadrick, Al Fredrickson, MaryAnn Bushaw, Phil Reece, Eric Schmidt, Dan Murphy, Cheryl McDowall, Bill LeFevre, Bob Fuller, Jon Paul, Robert Voll, Marion Elvin

The meeting was called to order by Phil Reece at 6:30 p.m.

Thanks to Cheryl for accepting the job of Advancement Chairman!!

Treasurer’s Report: Jon Paul presented the financial report.  Jon reviewed income and expenses from 2001 compared to the same of  2000.  Jon also presented a final report from the wreath/tree sales with a profit of $11,342.50.

Lice:  One of the Scouts developed head lice this past week.  Is there a policy or do we need some type of policy?  Phil will send an email to everyone that went to Lake Ripley to alert them.

Lockwood:  16 Webelos Scouts from Packs 429, 141, and 600 (6 of them are first year Webelos).  Pack 181 may be sending more, but we have not received any responses.  Eleven scouts and 3 adults are going for the entire trip.  Two more scouts will be invited to go.  Phil and Sandy will be there off and on.  Ed will bring the troop trailer.  Webelos Scouts from 429 will be joining the Troop.  Terry needs to bring applications for them to complete.

First Class Swimming & Swimming Merit Badge: Requirements have changed as of 1/1/02, deleting the 1st Class requirement to swim while wearing their clothes, and moving it to the merit badge

Calendar changes:

ü      Swimming is actually on April 8, rather than April 1, due to Spring break.

ü      OA elections and Fast Start are scheduled for April 9, which needs to be changed.

ü      First Aid Meet – a night for preparation has not fit into our schedule in the past years.  The patrols win a few events but not the entire meet.

ü      Two Family Nights are scheduled less than two months apart.  This is sooner than we usually have them  (the February date was in January in the past).  Need to monitor more closely in the future.

ü      Please let Terry know about any changes as soon as possible; and continuously.

Russell Woods: 26 Scouts are eligible to go on this camp-out – deadline is next Tuesday.  Need adults; we only have Eric Schmidt.  Bill and Bob are possible adults.

Philmont:  26 scouts and adults are signed up at this time.  This does not include the other troop.  The new scout professional, Mickey Grable, agreed to be the female advisor for the Venture crew.

Camping Costs: Eric would like the troop to extrapolate expected expenses for camp fees and equipment.  We need to figure out how much the troop is going to cover for each Scout.  The deposit has been sent to Philmont.  Next payment is due in October.  Troop 657 will be the fourth crew.

Isle Royale: Limited to a crew of 10 people.  Currently, we have 5 scouts and 3 adults.  We will need 5 backpacking tents and a lightweight tarp.  Eric and Jon are looking into different tents and prices.

Al:  Next week there will be (4) Boards of Review.  The following week will be Eagle Boards of Review for Adam LeFevre (6:15 p.m.) and Eric Paul (7:00).  Adults need to be available to handle all of these.

Show & Do: It is on March 23rd.  It is a good thing to attend, and several committee members are already signed up to go.  Registration deadline is March 8th.  The troop is paying the $10 fee (no late fees).

Climbing & Repelling: Al has signed up for instructor training in climbing and repelling on May 17-19   at Camp Lowden.  Phil and Bill will try to attend as alternates.  Motion was made and passed for the troop to pay for the fees.

Railroading Merit Badge: Reservations are scheduled for May 18th.  Marion will be one of the instructors.  Ed suggested doing a camp-out in that area for that weekend.  Marion will check to see what is available and costs.

Thank You card from the VFW for participating in the Veterans’ Day parade.

Annual Tour Permit/Rechartering: Dan will assume there are no changes unless someone notifies him immediately.  Rechartering needs to be done prior to the end of this month.

First Aid/CPR: Bill knows a member of the Fire Department who is certified to teach.  Bill would like to approach him as to how much he would do it for at Cherry Valley.  Perhaps he could do it in small groups.

Eagle Scout Project: St. Anthony’s is looking for a Scout to take a project of building special boards to help with Alzheimer patients.  Bill will call the four Scouts who are eligible to do Eagle projects.

Summer Camp: Costs are $55 per adult, $165 per Scout, and High Adventure is $315 per person.  Jon will present a proposal of how much the troop will pay and how much scouts/adults will pay.

Popcorn:  Sandy would coordinate it except for picking it up at Council office.  There are lots of expenses coming up, so Scouts can elect to do this to earn more money.  Approved by committee.

If you have receipts, please turn them into Jon so you can be reimbursed.  Or, they are tax-deductible.

Campouts:  We now have a reservation on March 15-17 at Rotary Forest Preserve for a campout.  It has no facilities in the cabin, but there is a new outhouse and close water.  The Geology Merit Badge event is that weekend – Scouts can attend both.  Motion to approve this was made and passed.

Summer Camp: The BMX cleanup is while our troop is at summer camp.  Recommendation that we sublet the project for this year only to another troop.  10 to 15 people are enough.  Terry will approach another troop, Morty Escew, to do it with us.

MaryAnn will be attending Wood Badge training.  You go girl!
