July 9, 2002

Present: Terry & Judi Nichols, Sandy Schwartz, Al Fredrickson, Phil Reece, Eric Schmidt, Bob Voll, Jon Paul, John Vermie, Craig Louthain, Dannette Holifield, MaryAnn Bushaw, Patrick Bushaw, Dan Murphy, Steve Fedor, Cheryl McDowall - the meeting was called to order at 8:15 pm.

Treasurer’s Report: Please see attached.  Submitted and reviewed by Jon Paul.

Lockwood Park:  July 20th – 9am to 1:30pm  scheduled service project.  Thanks to Sandy for organizing.

Philmont:

Air fares are very cheap at this time.  Lon Walker was looking into it a couple of months ago, but no new information is available.

Tents:

·        New tents were bought – 6 hiking tents.  They were about $135 each and 3-man tents.

CPR:  Bill or Eric will set up the next one.

Summer Camp:

·        High adventure was well run.  They were guided by 2 Tomahawk staff and 2 excellent guides from a local outfitter.  Then stayed at Temperance State Park – it was excellent!  They climbed in this park, but it was too difficult for most of the party.  Next time it is recommended to just do kayaking.

·        Much of the program could have been gotten at our own council.  They were a lot of young staff and lots of hidden fees.

·        Sandy has sent a couple of e-mails and phone calls to them.  She has not heard back from them.

·        We need to get more feedback from other local troops regarding these camps as we missed some things because we were just not aware of them.  Perhaps we need to keep files on all camps.

·        The boys liked the food for the most part.  Some of the food was not hot.

·        Classes varied in length and quality.

·        There were lots of unmet expectations based on the expectations given by the camp.

·        Showers did not have much water pressure and some were very old.

·        Furnished tents were mostly unacceptable.  They had no floors or platforms and there was lots of rain.  The troop used its own tents for about 2/3’s of our campers.

·        A special meeting will be held to discuss disposition of behavioral concerns.

Isle Royale:    One group is leaving this Sunday, July 14.

Order of the Arrow Elections: The inductions will take place at the Fall Conclave, August 16-18.  Lucas Dwyer accepted the position of OA Representative.  Patrick has a video for him to learn how to do elections.  The two scouts elected this year were “called out” at summer camp, but they will have to do their ordeals at the Fall Conclave.  Scouts are encouraged to do the brotherhood conversion.

Training:

·        MaryAnn’s Woodbadge training is scheduled to start on August 23rd.

·        The second course is still not firm yet.  Subsequently, it was postponed until 2003.

Life Guard Training: There is one scheduled for this Thursday – Saturday –Thursday.  Cost is $125.

John is still looking for other possibilities.  John may attend this one.  Al moved for the troop to pay for this training for anyone from the troop who will use it for the troop’s benefit.  Motion passed.

Cherry Valley Days: August 23-25; need people to work one trailer.  Venturing crew has first choice, and troop will handle if not enough help.

Swim Nights

·        Swim nights are scheduled for 1/7, 2/4, 3/4, 4/8, 5/6/2003.

·        The whole contract will be $305.

·        MaryAnn wants to discuss the diving boards as they relate to Boy Scout standards.

Blackhawk Area Regatta: The Venture crew and older scouts are encouraged to go on July 27, 2002.  Patrick is organizing this.

Webelos Overnight in Belvidere: We had 5 Scouts there.  All went well (except for mosquitoes).

Family Camp-out:

·        Reservations are confirmed for August 9-11, 2002.

·        John and committee are working on it.  JLT participants learned games and could be helpful.

New Business

Family Night / Court of Honor: Adam Crowley and Terry are coordinating the agenda for that.

Festa Italiana: August 2-5th, 2002.  Need sign-up sheets for next week.  Al Fredrickson will do scheduling.  Steve Fedor will confirm with Festa’s committee – Paul.  Need to split up older scouts to get better work production.

Fall Cook-O-Ree: October 11-13 at Camp Lowden. Just like a camporee.  Climbing tower will be open.  Terry will coordinate.

Miscellaneous:  Terry passed around three flyers, including one on aviation, for various events.

Religious retreat: September 21, 2002 – at least two scouts are going.  Tyler will be presenting information on it at the next meeting.

Troop JLT: Terry will run it again and Bob will help coordinate it for August 24.

Bike Hike:

·        September 7-8, 2002

·        There needs to be significant preparation – both of bikes and riders – before doing it again.  Adults need to be prepared to provide structure and discipline.

·        Need to explore possibly trails – possibly one along the Illinois River.

·        Eric will coordinate the planning.

BMX Clean-up: There were 1000 more people than previously.  The mess was a disaster.  They paid us even more without our request - $500.  Money needs to be distributed with the other troop and the scouts who participated.  Suggestions:  We needed more volunteers.  We would need extra money.  We need clarification about cleaning up Lockwood if there is camping.  There were zip ties everywhere, overflowing garbage cans, and informal fire pits with garbage in them.  One guy was giving them a lot of unreasonable orders.  There were vendors and campers still there.  Eric will check out these concerns with the management.

Summer Camp for 2003: Probably should consider one of our council camps.  Present this to PLC to decide quickly.  Patrick will discuss with them and report next month.

Lyme Desease: Both Nathaniel and Ed have been diagnosed with it.  It mimics the flu.  Sometimes there is a circular inflammation or rash.  If placed on antibiotic immediately, there is no problem.  Lucas was feeling sick, so the doctor treated with medication without even testing.  This should be discussed at the next Tuesday meeting.  Phil will call those families who have not had recent contact with the troop or e-mails.

Climbing dates: Cheryl is looking into information, forms, dates, etc.  Terry was Climb On Safely certified at summer camp.  Al was previously certified this year.

Committee minutes: They are available at the fire station or on the Internet or via e-mail.
