BSA Troop 181 Committee Minutes

October 8, 2002

Present: Phil Reece, Bob Voll, Dannette Holifield, Al Fredrickson, Dan Murphy, Jon Paul, Eric Schmidt, Craig Louthain, MaryAnn Bushaw, and Terry Nichols

Meeting started at 8:15.

Treasurer’s Report: Please see attached. Submitted and reviewed by Jon Paul. Spud Hut money was received; Eleven scouts worked 23 shifts @ $60 each = $1,380.

Past Events

June - Summer Camp: Sandy received some supplies from Tomahawk Scout Reservation. Still missing some merit badge cards, and Camp patches are still missing.

Aug. 23 – Woodbadge Training: The Woodbadge course is completed, MaryAnn and Peggy are working their tickets. The ‘application phase’ needs to be completed in 6 – 18 months. MaryAnn will work on troop training. Peggy is working on Order of the Arrow.

Bike Hike: Zane West, Troop Scribe, needs to write a ‘thank you letter’ to the Scout Museum.

Sept. 20-22 - Religious retreat: Two scouts attended and one ‘adopted’ scout from Troop 123. In the future, we need more scouts to attend. They worked on a project to build bat houses to be installed at camp Lowden. (Apparently, a bat will eat thousands of mosquitoes each day.) Tyler will be working on passing out more information on religious awards. Suggestion for adults to look into earning religious awards for themselves. MaryAnn will include this information in her ‘training’ pursuit.

Sept. 25 - Leader Basics: Phil & Dannette will be attending. Jim West and Cheryl McDowell also need to attend overnight session on October 19th.

CPR: Eric has 5 people set up, still needs a date. Eric will decide tonight.

Future Events

Oct. 11-13, Cook-O-Ree II: All plans are under control.

October 22 - Court of Honor: Court of honor is under control. Matthew Louthain will be the MC. Terry will work with him on an agenda and preparations.

Christmas Wreaths & Trees: Wreath sales under way. Two scouts have sold over $100. Peggy needs a form brought to her (Note: she is absent because her mother is in surgery tonight.)

Nov. 1 - Popcorn Sales: Paper work was picked up at Roundtable. This is strictly an optional activity.

Popcorn sales may begin November 1st.

Forms to be turned in by week of Thanksgiving.

Popcorn picked up first week of December.

Nov. 2 - Yard Rake: Bill LeFevre is coordinating it. Definitely weather dependent. Optional activity.

Nov. 9 - Veterans Day Parade: Bill will make announcements during troop meetings and Family Night.

November 16 - Christmas Tree Lot Set-Up: Invoiced by Kingma Christmas Tree Farm for $889; 20% down, still owe $3,556 to be paid two weeks after delivery. (Bring Terry next time car shopping.) Thanks to Terry for the extra negotiations. Still need to find tree bags. Kelco sells bags and netting, suggested selling bags for $2.00 each (cost is almost $1 each). Need some large tarps to cover trees. Al will work on ‘appreciation signs’ and ‘wreath signs.’ Al will be coordinating lot, MaryAnn will be alternate location for money collections. Encourage brothers to work same shift with one adult. Tree lot money is only available to troop, not Venture crew. Schedule to be presented at Family Night. Need to reinforce conditions of running the Christmas Tree Lot because money was left in trailer last year.

Order of the Arrow Elections: Peggy is going to work on this as part of her ticket.

Summer 2003 - Philmont: Bill will have information at Family Night.

Summer 2003 - Camp for Younger Scouts: Sub committee needs to meet to choose dates. Terry, Phil, Craig, and Sandy.

Miscellaneous Business

Climbing dates: Climbing dates still need to be chosen. Terry and Al still need to plan.

Fund raising for Venture crew: Money received from Cherry Valley Days. Venture Crew hopes to get food trailer next year, will look into renting out elephant ear trailer from Troop 411. Bill will check into troop selling Pepsi trailer.

Great Lakes Naval Base: Still need to come up with dates. Looking at January or February. Phil and Terry need to come up with some dates.

Historian: Dan Murphy is continuing as Historian Coach, already working with OJ, Troop Historian. Need to confirm photo albums. Need to look into buying disposable cameras.

Klondike Derby: Nathaniel expressed that there is some interest in this event. Eric has the literature. It is the same week as Lake Ripley camp-in. Scouts can go to one or the other.
