BSA Troop 181 Committee Minutes

December 12, 2002

Present: Ed Blondin, Dan Murphy, Eric Schmidt, Bill LeFevre, Judi and Terry Nichols

Meeting started at 8:15 .

Treasurer’s Report: Please see attached. Submitted by Jon Paul. Presented by Dan Murphy.

Past Events

Bike Hike: Phil will check to see if Zane West, Troop Scribe, sent a ‘thank you letter’ to the Scout Museum in Ottawa .

CPR Training: 5 people attended and said it was excellent.  The troop needs to make sure certifications are up-to-date before going Philmont in 2003.  The cards from the last course came in the mail, per Ed.

Nov. 9 - Veterans Day Parade: Terry needs Greenlands about the pictures. No news about the flagpoles.

Future Events

Christmas Wreaths: Al said almost all the wreaths are sold, but prices were lowered.  All the money for the presale has been turned in.  Say “thanks” at the next family night.  The receipt book was never found.

Nov. 1 - Popcorn Sales: The popcorn will be picked up this Saturday. It will be at the fire station next Tuesday, 12/17/02 .

Nov. 16 - Yard Rake: The $400 check has been deposited.  Note:  Mr. Boone had a heart attack in the last few days, and Dan circulated a “get well” card for signatures.

November 16 - Christmas Tree Lot : No construction trailer is available this year, but we did get the dumpster and potty.

Leader Basics: Next one is scheduled for April 3, 2003 .  There will be a new session about “TroopMaster”.  Phil will ask Cheryl to go.

Summer 2003 - Philmont: No changes – still 19 people are committed.  It would be nice to get one more person.  Bill will ask Amtrak about tickets if the company goes out of business.  It would be nice to have 2 more girls.  Need to determine costs for adults.  Bill will deposit some old checks.

Summer 2003 - Camp for Younger Scouts: The troop is going to Canyon Camp on July 20-26, 2003 .

Aug. 22-24 & Sept. 26-28, 2003 – Woodbadge Training: Registration is already taking place -- so anyone interested should submit an application soon.  One position is already paid for.  Nothing new.

Miscellaneous Business

Eddie Beck & Andrew Benoy:  want to make a new board to honor Eagle Scouts. The old board was taken down. Andrew does beautiful woodworking.  Eric will work with the boys to “make it happen.”

Climbing dates: Climbing dates will be chosen for next Spring.  No new news.

Great Lakes Naval Base: March 14-16: the troop has a reservation for that weekend.  Phil & Marion are looking into arrangements for troop.  Considering basic training and navigating by the stars.

Super Fund raiser: The troop is looking into new possibilities.  Eric, Bill, etc. will be checking into ideas.  Could do a “spud hut” at Cherry Valley Days, possibly.

Historian:  Dan Murphy still needs to get disposable cameras for OJ, and albums from Andrew Benoy.

Klondike Derby : Maybe 3 or 4 will work the event, then go to Lake Ripley .

Webelos camping: Ed recommended changing the date to January 10-12, to get Webelos involved with the troop before they make a final decision.  Ed will make arrangements for January as first choice; the second choice would be February 7-9, 2003.  Stronghold is too expensive.  Camp McCormick may have openings in January and February, and they would make a deal with us.  Ed will try to get Friendship Lodge for $200.  Otherwise, Lockwood can do it for free.

Troop Development: Sub-committee still needs to meet.  Sandy will coordinate it.

Florida Sea Base: No new information. Eric will call Patrick Bushaw for updates.

Indianapolis Time Trials: Eric is checking into arrangements and possibility of camping somewhere.

New Business

Bryce Russell: has already paid $10 to be re-registered with the troop next February.

Christmas Trees: Check for $3449.50 will be sent tomorrow.  We were shorted 19, plus 14 free trees and Harold Kingma said “OK”.  Next year the troop may wish to explore wreaths from him, as they were beautiful (and a little more money)!  (Al’s e-mail)  When customers were aware of the bags, they usually bought them.  The baler spring needs to be repaired permanently.  There are still a few uncovered time spots.  Need to seriously consider changing shift times during the week to 4:30 - 8:30.  There will be a pizza party next week, so the lights at the lot will be turned off that night.

Friends of Scouting: Has been set for the Court of Honor in January 2003.

Swim Nights: The troop will still invite Webelos to these.  Cost is $2 per Scout; adults are free.  John Vermie is trained now as a lifeguard.  Marcus will try to lifeguard at most of the swim nights.

Annual Tour Permit:  Dan will handle this.  Eric said there will be changes in the form.  We’ll look.

Fax: Eric has a new facimile machine at home that the troop can use, if needed.
